As I did my usual Sunday morning scroll on social media this weekend, I was met with what I thought was a throwback photo of Katie Holmes. Upon second glance I realised it wasn’t 2002, but 2022, and the actress and bonafide style icon was attempting one of the most polarising trends of the Y2K era – the jeans and a dress combo.
At the weekend Holmes stepped out at the annual iHeart Radio Jingle Ball red carpet in Madison Square Garden. But forget glittery party dresses. Holmes chose a teeny tiny blue mini dress over the top of distressed jeans and black New Balance sneakers. Oh, and don’t forget the nose ring.
It’s an ensemble loved in the early 2000s and most memorably worn by Disney Channel stars like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Ashlee Tisdale.
Y2K style has infiltrated fashion in recent years giving tricky trends like the Von Dutch hat, Juicy Couture tracksuits and low-rise denim a brief bout of air time. While jeans and dresses is a hard sell, we shouldn’t discount the influence of the “Dawsons Creek” alum. She sounded the return of the crochet dress in June and put Boho back on the sartorial map in September.
Now all that is left to do is wait for Bella Hadid – a favourite Y2K dresser and Depop queen – to solidify the look. Pray for us.
