As the Australian bushfires worsen and the largest mass evacuation the country has ever seen continues across NSW, thousands are fleeing their homes without knowing whether they’ll be there to return to once the crisis is under control.
Nicole Kidman, who donated $500,000 to rural fire services on Sunday, was seen attending a scheduled Golden Globes event in Los Angeles that evening, reportedly in tears after learning that her home in Sydney is under threat.
The actress arrived late after finding out the news on her way to the Beverly Hills event, telling press upon arrival that she is “distracted right now with everything happening in Australia” and declining to speak about other matters.
Prior to the appearance, Kidman took to Instagram to share links for people to donate to fire services, writing, “Our family’s support, thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the fires all over Australia. We are donating $500,000 to the Rural Fire Services who are all doing and giving so much right now.”
Comedian Celeste Barber posted images from her mother-in-law’s home in Eden, NSW, which is now being evacuated as the fires turn towards the coastal town. She wrote that her family is “terrified” and set up a link for people to donate which has since raised $28m for the NSW Rural Fire Service.
In NSW the total number of homes lost is over 1,400 with numbers expected to grow exponentially. The death toll now sits at 24 with over 450,000,000 wildlife estimated to have been lost since the fires started months ago.
