We bet you never had a friend as generous (or ageless or as good-looking) as George Clooney. The director and two-time Oscar-winning actor has taken YTB to a whole new level when he invited 14 of his closest guy friends – affectionately referred to as ‘The Boys’ – to dinner, and then proceeded to thank them for their ongoing support through a sweet gratitude speech, and mass amounts of cold, hard cash. Collectively $14 million, to be exact.
One of these lucky few is Rande Gerber, who revealed the story on a recent episode of MSNBC Headliners.”George had called me and ‘The Boys’ and said, ‘Hey, mark Sept. 27, 2013, on your calendar. Everyone’s going to come to my house for dinner.'” When the men arrived, they reportedly found custom designer suitcases on each seat filled with $20 notes amounting to a very cool million dollars – each. The reason behind the generous gift? Clooney wanted to express his appreciation and give back to the men who helped him in the early days of his career.
“George begins to say, ‘Listen, I want you guys to know how much you’ve meant to me and how much you mean to me in my life. I came to L.A., I slept on your couch. I’m so fortunate in my life to have all of you and I couldn’t be where I am today without all of you. So ‘it was really important to me that while we’re still all here together, that I give back. So I want you all to open your suitcases.'”
Although Gerber himself is a very successful entrepreneur (and definitely isn’t a man down on his luck – the multi-millionaire is also married to one of the first ever supermodels, Cindy Crawford), and initially refused to accept the money, the movie star already had a rebuttal planned.
Clooney cheekily announced to the group, “If Rande doesn’t take the million dollars, nobody gets it.”
This good-hearted blackmail worked, and although Gerber donated his million to charity, he went on to detail how this lavish gift was life-changing for many of the men in the boys club. Some of them were struggling and living paycheck to paycheck at the time. “One was working at a bar in Texas at the airport, trying just to support his family. Rides a bicycle to work every day” he explained.
According to Gerber, Clooney went on to say, ‘I know we’ve all been through some hard times, some of you are still going through it. You don’t have to worry about your kids, you don’t have to worry about, you know, school, you don’t have to worry about paying your mortgage.’
Not one to overlook the details, the 56-year-old also paid off their taxes for the year. Exactly a year later, on the same date, Clooney married British human rights lawyer Amal in a lavish wedding in Italy. “That’s good karma right there,” said Gerber. The philanthropic couple are known for their ongoing charity work and contributions, so it’s good karma indeed.
We can only imagine what kind of Christmas gifts his leading lady and their twin bubs will receive from the bighearted silver fox.
