In her emotional American Music Awards speech in November – her first public appearance after three months in rehab to treat physical and mental exhaustion – Selena Gomez said “I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram, I want to see what’s in here,” and put a hand on heart.
The Hands To Myself singer might not want to see anyone else’s body but apparently she doesn’t mind showing hers off, because she posed virtually nude on Instagram on Thursday.
In a shot posted by fashion photographer Mert Alas on Thursday, Selena wears only a G-string and holds a towel across her chest, looking into the mirror behind her. Add some bad-ass gold hoops and some ink visible across her back, and it seems what we’re seeing is Selena’s evolution from good girl of the pop world to … something else.
Could this edgy look be for The Weeknd, who she was seen kissing outside a Los Angeles restaurant on Tuesday? The Can’t Feel My Face singer, real name Abel Tesfaye, is far from innocent: his lyrics often reference drug use, and he’s far from a clean-cut pop star.
Could it be a jibe at Bella Hadid, The Weeknd’s long-time girlfriend until recently, who promptly unfollowed Selena when news of their romance broke?
Or maybe it’s not for anyone except herself. After all, that Arabic inking on Selena’s back visible in the mirror? It translates to ‘love yourself first’.
As for Hadid’s response to Gomez’s Instagram? Two can play at that game.
