emmastpneIn news that won’t surprise anyone who’s been following the 2017 awards season, La La Land has dominated today’s Oscars nominations announcement.

The Damien Chazelle directed musical-comedy-drama received a total of 14 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Chazelle, and Best Actor and Best Actress for its stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The remarkable number of nods means La La Land ties with Titanic and All About Eve for the most Academy Award nominations ever received by a film.

The other movies up for Best Picture are Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Lion, Manchester By The Sea and Moonlight.

The announcement also reveals plenty of reasons for Australians to celebrate. For the first time ever two Australian produced films are nominated: Lion and Hacksaw Ridge. Nicole Kidman earned a Best Supporting Actress nod for her role in Lion, the tale of an Indian boy (Dev Patel) adopted by an Australian couple who returns to his birth country looking for his biological mother, meanwhile World War II movie Hacksaw Ridge is directed by Mel Gibson.
