South London: In light of how ubiquitous the news headlines are about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s confirmed relationship, it seemed a little unexpected the new couple would set foot in public so casually. But such was royal life overnight as the Prince, 32, romantically took his girlfriend, 35, shopping for a Christmas tree.

Dating since August, the couple visited Pines and Needles in Battersea Park where they purchased a six foot Christmas tree and were served by a shop assistant who didn’t immediately recognise Markle or The Prince. “I had no idea who he was at all. I was talking to the girl mostly – she was really nice,” said shop assistant, and fellow American, Zaqia Crawford. “They were really cool. It was a really casual situation. It was just like an ordinary customer conversation. It was totally clear that they were a couple. It wasn’t overly affectionate or anything like that — they were just doing cute, couple-y stuff, like making each other laugh and being excited. Just lots of touching and laughing. They were just like any other couple.”

Another shop assistant, Ollie Wilkinson, also served the pair. “I gave [Prince Harry] a bunch of mistletoe – he smelled one of the berries and said it ‘smelled a bit weird’ and [Meghan] said she liked it. Then they got into the car. They walked off holding hands with [Prince Harry] holding the tree in one hand.”

Owner of the store Sam Lyle knew immediately who the famous couple were. “They were completely charming together and blissfully unaware that our jaws had hit the floor,” he said. “They chose a gorgeous Nordmann Fir and walked away after exchanging Christmas pleasantries.”

The tree’s purchase has prompted speculation the couple will spend Christmas together. *Hearts bursting*
