The chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone was easily the highlight of 2011 film Crazy Stupid Love.

The actors also shared the screen in 2013’s Gangster Squad, but at last there’s a new film putting the pair centre stage once again – La La Land.

A trailer for the movie from the director of Academy Award winning film Whiplash, Damien Chazelle, has just been released and reveals a dream-like world in which Stone and Gosling’s characters fall in love with Los Angeles as a backdrop.

There are no words in the trailer. The only voice that can be heard is Ryan singing – he plays Joe, a jazz musician struggling to make it in Hollywood. He meets Mia, an aspiring actress working as a waitress. The movie, set for release in December, follows the pair as they fall in love amidst the trials and tribulations of trying to make their dreams of becoming successful performers come true.

Watching a couple fall in love through a hazy lens is reminiscent of Ryan’s 2010 film Blue Valentine, which also starred Michelle Williams and documented a relationship from the heady days of falling in love to its eventual unraveling.

The film is likely to garner Oscars attention after director Chazelle’s last film, Whiplash, won several Academy Awards and received a Best Picture nomination.

If you love the song Ryan sings in the trailer, City of Stars, it’s an original track and can be purchased on iTunes.

La La Land is set to open the Venice Film Festival on August 31 and will hit cinemas locally in December.
