Kristen Stewart has avoided speaking publicly about her girlfriend of more than a year Alicia Cargile – until now.

The Café Society actress now feels comfortable opening up about her relationship after the circus that surrounded she and ex-boyfriend (and Twilight co-star) Robert Pattinson from about 2008 to 2014 forced her to stop talking about her private life.

“I think also right now I’m just really in love with my girlfriend,” she told ELLE UK.

“We’ve broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and this time I was like, ‘Finally, I can feel again.’”

The 26-year-old said the intense public attention on she and Pattinson affected their relationship.

“When I was dating a guy I was hiding everything that I did because everything personal felt like it was immediately trivialised, so I didn’t like it,” she explained.

“We were turned into these characters and placed into this ridiculous comic book, and I was like, ‘That’s mine. You’re making my relationship something that it’s not.’ I didn’t like that.”

But Stewart says now that she’s with freelance visual effects producer Cargile, she doesn’t want being low-key about her relationship to be misinterpreted as not being proud of it.

“It changed when I started dating a girl. I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it’, so I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.”’

In response to questions about her sexuality, Stewart has repeatedly refused to define herself.

“I think in three or four years, there are going to be a whole lot more people who don’t think it’s necessary to figure out if you’re gay or straight,” she told Nylon last year. “It’s like, just do your thing.”

Alicia walked the red carpet with Kristen at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
