American singer Halsey has slammed Iggy Azalea in a new interview, naming the Australian rapper as an artist she would never collaborate with.

“There’s a lot of people I wouldn’t put on my record,” the Gasoline singer told the Guardian.

“Iggy Azalea: absolutely not. She had a complete disregard for black culture. F*cking moron. I watched her career dissolve and it fascinated me.”

Iggy has been heavily criticised in the US for adopting rap culture as a white Australian woman, given its roots in black American culture. She’s been accused of profiting from black culture while doing nothing to advance it – for example, she’s been criticised for not speaking out on issues affecting black Americans.

However there are those the defend Iggy’s place in hip-hop culture, and compare the criticism of her to Eminem when he first started: he was labelled inauthentic and a gimmick, but many would agree he’s earned his place in rap over the years.

It’s interesting timing for Halsey to take aim at Iggy: Azalea’s new album Digital Distortion is due for release on June 30.

The Black Widow rapper is yet to respond to Halsey’s comments, so it remains to be seen if Halsey Vs Iggy is the new Katy Vs Taylor.
