Three months after she split from long-time boyfriend The Weeknd – and a month after he and Selena Gomez’s relationship was revealed – Bella Hadid has spoken publicly for the first time about the break-up.
As this month’s Teen Vogue cover star, the 20-year-old model and It girl opened up about the pain of ending their two-year, on-and-off romance. Hadid said it was the second most traumatising break-up of her life after she was forced to give away her pet horse, Lego when her equestrian career came to an end.
“It was my first breakup—or second, next to the horse—and so public,” she reflected in an interview with the magazine. “As an outsider, you might think I handled it so well, but it’s always in your heart, and you always feel it very heavily. It’ll be hard for a while. Love hurts, but you have to pull through.”
The Victoria’s Secret model added that there are no hard feelings towards her ex, real name Abel Tesfaye, from her end.

“I’ll always respect him, and I’ll always love him,” she said. “Sometimes you want to be sad about it or handle it differently, but at the end of the day, you never want to burn a bridge that you’ve fought so hard to build.”
It’s the right message to send to the title’s teen readers, who are at an age where a break-up – or even just being rejected by your crush – can feel like the end of the world.
Since their split in November The Weeknd and Selena have fast become an item, taking a trip to Italy together and doing other couple-y things. They didn’t attend the Grammys together, as it had been rumoured they would, but the new couple was spotted at Rihanna’s Grammys after party, before leaving together.
